Treatment of Dry Eyes
Two main causes of dry eyes are inflammation of the tear-producing glands and poor functioning tear glands. Dry eyes can be exacerbated by smoke, wind, heat, low humidity, or prolonged use of the eyes (e.g. computer use). Risk factors include older age, hormone imbalances, inflammatory diseases (e.g. Sjoren’s disease, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis), eye procedures, incomplete eyelid closure, especially during sleep, medications, and poor hygiene. Dry eyes are a very common condition and there are many treatment options. Common treatment modalities include rewetting drops, lid cleaning cloths, antibacterial ointments, and anti-inflammatory drops. In more severe cases, you may require procedures such as punctal plug placement or surgery. During your evaluation, we will assess the most appropriate level of care for you and provide you with the information and treatment you need to start feeling better.
